Info: Maizy is an athletic little dog who loves walks. She is very energetic and needs a home that has lots of time to play with her. Maizy will need leash and house-training – so she is looking for a family with lots of love and patience to help her learn. She loves to cuddle in any lap that is available. She is quite petite and only weighs 11 pounds.  Maizy has the most adorable little curly tail that is constantly wagging! Organic Oscar’s list of things to do on Earth Day 2012:

1) Get outside! The best way to celebrate Earth is to enjoy it!

2) Plant a tree or work in the garden. Trees, flowers and plants add more beauty, color and oxygen to the environment. Plant your own vegetables for a healthy treat.

3) Go to the beach. Watch the waves and feel the wind in your hair, as a bonus, pick up trash as you walk along the sand. Mother nature needs our help to stay clean! Check your area for dog beaches, so your dog can keep you company.

4) Take a walk or hike. Exercise makes you and your pup healthy and where better to do it then the great outdoors?

5) Recycle! If you aren’t already recycling, now the time to start! Separate your paper, cans and bottles to be recycled.  Recycle other things as well! Old clothes and toys can be donated to thrift stores or homeless shelters to be reused by others.

6) Go paperless. Sign in online to have your bank statements and bills posted on your online account instead of mailed to your home.

7) Buy organic. Organic products are free from chemicals and pesticides that can be harmful to the soil, us and our pets.  Nature’s ingredients are the best!

8 ) Cut back on meat. Animal agriculture produces 100 million tons of methane (the greenhouse gas most responsible for global warming) every year. By reducing the intake of meat, the extreme amount of methane can be reduced as well.

9) Walk or bike instead of driving. Take steps towards reducing car emissions and improving your health!

10) Use canvas bags. Instead of taking home your groceries in plastic bags, take a canvas bag to the store with you. Check your local grocery store for bins where you can return plastic bags to be recycled/reused. Encourage friends and family to do the same!

Leonbergers are a rare (and large!) breed of dog. Known for their dependency, Leonbergers are very friendly and make wonderful family dogs.  To celebrate the often unheard dog, Leonberger owners from all over the world join together annually to celebrate at the Leonberger Club of America (LCA). This April, the club is meeting in Oconomowoc, WI on April 10^th – April 15^th to celebrate the 27th Annual National Specialty Show. Club Members, Breeders and Owners from all over the United States, Canada and Europe will gather to showcase their Leos.  LCA says they expect an entry of over 250 Leonbergers and well over 400 attendees at this spectacular event.

One of the most spectacular characteristics of Leonbergers is their thick, water resistant double coat. This soft, yet dense coat is difficult to take care of, so Organic Oscar was excited to take on the challenge when we were asked by the LCA to be a sponsor for the event!  The Show Committee will be putting together a gift bag that will be filled with treats, food samples, supplements and toys to give to each registered attendee.  Organic Oscar will be giving samples to every attendee.  Luanne Moede of the BluDrift Leonbergers says  “I am also very excited to be able to supply samples of Organic Oscar at the National Specialty, I think people will fall in love with it!”

What is it?
Earth Hour is a worldwide event that encourages people to show their support for the planet and take positive individual responsibility for their environmental impact.

How to participate:
On Saturday, March 31st at 8:30pm (your local time) turn off your lights for 60 minutes. It’s as simple as that! By turning off the lights in your home, you can show your support for global change and make a commitment to make changes in your habits.

Earth Hour 2011:
“During Earth Hour 2011 more than 5200 cities, towns and municipalities across 135 countries participated in this event. 89 national capitals and 9 of the world’s 10 most populated cities joined the cause. In addition, more than 1700 landmarks also went dark for Earth Hour 2011, including Bird’s Nest (Olympic Stadium) in Beijing, Eiffel Tower in Paris, The Las Vegas Strip, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, The Acropolis in Athens, The Coliseum in Rome, Empire State Building and Table Mountain in Cape Town.”

Do’s:
–Turn off the lights in your home or office
–Tell your friends about this event! The more people that participate, the better
–Try to go longer than 60 minutes. An hour helps, but by making the extra effort, you are already beginning to make a bigger change
–Burn candles (100% beeswax or soy candles are best for the planet – nontoxic and smoke-free!)
–Make every day Earth day! Turn off unnecessary lights, recycle, reuse, stop buying plastic water bottles, take shorter showers etc!

Global Pet Expo is the pet industry’s largest annual trade show and this year, the event brought in over 900 exhibitors and more than 5,000 attendees! Organic Oscar’s booth was located in the Natural Pet section along with other holistic animal products.
